Sound: Advanced Topics I

Columbia University
Fall, 2025 -- GU6610
Brad Garton and Artun Çekem

course syllabus

I will be covering many of the topics that I have discussed in past classes (scroll down on that page for previous syllabi on-line) -- VR, DSP, algorithmic composition, generative music, AI, etc. -- but I will be doing it in a very different way this term. Come to the first class meeting (Wednesday, Sept. 3 2025, 6 PM; room 320H Prentis) to find out more and be admitted into the class.

There will be a lot of music.

Structure

We'll be meeting on Wednesdays from 6:10 PM to about 8:00 PM in room 320H Prentis.

Collected here are links to the software behind what we will be showing in class:

Facilities

The CMC studios are available for use by you. Check with me or Artun about how best to access them.

Do let us know if you are having problems. You really shouldn't be this semester.

Syllabus

The course syllabus is located here.

Each week we do will become a link to information relating to that class. We will link the material we show/audition in class through these pages. We'll try to keep up with linking everything, but we may fall behind. Yell at us when we do.

Contact Information

The best way to reach us is through e-mail: We won't be having "office hours"; use e-mail to make an appointment. Generally, however, we'll be around the CMC before and after class.

Security and Access Policy

Your CUID card should work to open the main door to Prentis Hall, 24/7. We will be telling you the CMC studio door codes in class. We have a reservation system in place for you to use the studios and CMC gear. We will also be covering this in class.

Grades

We'll discuss this the first class meeting.

Hope you enjoy the class!
