I sat down at our glorious piano and soaked up the sound of the resonating strings, playing chords dispersed in time so I could hear the sonic interplay in the piano hardware. This led to the creation of the four pieces above.
I decided to incorporate some of the synthetic world I had been inhabiting, thinking of these as little "piano + synthesiser" etudes. They are purposefully minimal; the real action of the music comes from the unfolding piano timbres.
Sometimes I do some music that really seems to capture (somehow) the particular feeling of life I an then experiencing. An older example of this capturing is my Three Hopeless Songs (also coincidentally -- or maybe not -- relatively minimal piano pieces) done during an intense period of my life. Is this period intense? Well, maybe... retirement, some medical stuff, parental care.
Whatever the case, I do like these a lot.
