After studying at the University of Auckland he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 1992 to study with Charles Dodge at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. Suttor is currently a doctoral student in composition at Columbia University where his teachers include Brad Garton and Fred Lerdahl. Recent projects include an hour long tape piece for Pina Bausch's company at the Folkwang Hochschulle in Essen, Germany.
