Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis has received international recognition for his compositions as well as for virtuoso performances. He has received commissions from the Lyric Opera of Chicago, American Music Theater Festival, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Kansas City and Houston Symphony Orchestras as well as the American Composers' Orchestra, and from Carnegie Hall and the Massachusetts Instititute of Technology. He has composed four operas: X: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOLM X, UNDER THE DOUBLE MOON, TANIA, an opera based on the kidnapping of Patty Hearst and AMISTAD, a re-telling of the rebellion on the slave ship Amistad in 1839 and subsequent trial. Mr. Davis lectured in music and Afro-American Studies at Yale from 1981-1982 and was a visiting composer in the School of Music in 1990, 1994 and 1996. In 1987 he was a senior fellow in the Society for the Humanities at Cornell and from 1992 to 1996 he was a visiting lecturer in Afro-American Studies at Harvard University. Mr. Davis is presently Professor of Music at the Unversity of California, San Diego.
