Brad Garton and Dave Topper co-authored the RTcmix computer music language, which is being used to process the sound of the mandolin during performance. The software transforms and modifies the sound of the mandolin, the goal being the creation of a musical "character" that travels in the virtual sonic world constructed by the background sounds of the piece (digitally recorded and also transformed using RTcmix). The sound processing is all done in software, using a general purpose computer -- no specialized hardware is being used.
