UofA Directed Study

Students from various departments have come together for the purpose of creating a collaborative, interactive and artistic offering that includes interactive technologies, improvisation, drama, dance and music. The aim of the project is to create a sound environment that is both interactive with members of the directed study and of the audience, thereby breaking down the conventional performer-observer paradigm.

This environment will be comprised of “sound sculptures” envisioned and created by each member of the directed study. Each member will create a sound sculpture through their own research as well as taking part in the other member’s projects, lending a hand or offering advice when needed. In this way, the work is reflective of the individual who pioneered it and the story/flow/aesthetic of the sound environment as a whole. These ”sound sculptures” will be placed strategically in a room that will allow the sculptures to interact with both the performers and the audience members.

The Bather

The Bather is a collaborative computer interactive sound and video art installation, a collaboration between sound and media artist Shawn Pinchbeck, musician Chris Driedzic and dancer Susanna Hood. Using a simple touch interface and the projection of an individual taking a bath, the user explores the dance-like movements and soundscape of the projected individual taking a bath; creating a personal and poetic interactive experience. Shawn Pinchbeck will discuss the creative and technical aspects of this work; exploring the merging of interaction, dance, video, and sound.
