It's easy to set up disc-o so that people at different computers can work together.
1. Launch disc-o-master on a single "master" computer
When you run disc-o-master, you're asked for a port number. This is the port number on which disc-o-master checks for disc-o-modules on other computers (or on the same computer) that want to connect to it. It doesn't really matter what this number is, as long as everyone participating uses the same number. The default, 50500, is usually fine.
2. Launch some disc-o modules on other networked computers
Once you have disc-o-master running on one computer, you can run disc-o modules from any other Internet-connected computer, even computers in a different classroom or halfway around the world! All of the disc-o modules will receive the same continuous data from disc-o-master on the master computer. (You can also, of course, run disc-o modules on the same computer as disc-o-master.)
3. Enter the correct server name and port number in each disc-o module
When you run each disc-o module, it displays a dialog box asking for a server name and a port number.
The server name is the network name (or ip address) of the computer on which disc-o-master is running. If the disc-o module is running on the same machine as disc-o master, you can leave the server name set to the default, "localhost." If you don't know how to find out the network name or ip address of the machine running disc-o-master, contact your network administrator.
The port number is the same number that you used when launching the disc-o-master (see step 1 above).
When you hit "ok" the module will try to connect to disc-o-master. When it successfully connects, the module's main window appears. If there's a problem connecting, the module will display an error message and quit.
Tips:
Start out by running both the disc-o-master and the disc-o modules on the same machine to get a feel for how they work. Then you can try running some modules on a different computer than disc-o-master.
You can run as many modules as you want (on one or many machines), and they can all connect to the same disc-o-master. Usually, only one machine should be running the disc-o-master at once.
If you do want to run multiple disc-o-masters, each one must have a different port number (see step 1 above). Remember, though, that each disc-o module can only connect to one disc-o-master.
For additional networking assistance or troubleshooting, ask your network administrator.
