microphones, convertors, feedback, distortion
We thought we'd start the term with some Real Live things, so this class
we discussed the mechanics of the process of getting sound into
digital form for live signal-processing. Different mics, different preamps,
sources of distortion and of course feedback.
Links
Here are a few links to some basic microphone information:
- Media College Micrphone Tutorials
-- click on some of the other links they provide
- The Beginnier's Guide to Microphones
-- basic stuff, but not bad.
I couldn't find any decent links about distortion, feedback, clipping,
audio interfaces, etc. These areas are heavily commercialized, and most
all the sites I found were veiled (or not-so-vieled) ads for particular
products. I think we covered most of the main points in class, though.
We'll be dealing with these things through the rest of the term, too.
Plus a lot is just 'learning by doing'.

- week2-patches.zip
-- the "auto-feedback" patches we made. We finished it the following
week because we ran short on time, but the patches are all included
here. Also there is a "testwithnoise" version that uses
the [noise~] object as input instead of live sound.
