Model Improvisation
performance modeling
an ad-hoc approach to modeling musical performance, interacting
with the model.

music:
I played excerpts from a few of my own pieces (massive ego brad!) in
class that used performance models extensively...
- Rough Raga Riffs -- the 'heavy metal/raga' piece
- Almost Real -- the fake Irish piece
- guns -- just for fun; the guitar and bass are totally virtual (played by performance model code)
synthesis:
For the music above (and in most of the non-Burundi class examples linked
above), the Karplus-Strong or "plucked string" algorithm is used a lot.
If you google "Karplus Strong" you'll get many links, and -- of course --
the
- wikipedia page on the Karplus-Strong algorithm
is a good place to start. I think I'll talk a bit more about this
algorithm in the next class.
Applications and Examples
Class patches:
The progression of models of the Burundi drummers, including the
soundfile we recorded as "drums" in class.
Sounds:
- drummers_of_burundi.mp3
-- the "Warrior Drums" we attempted to emulate
- thadrums.mp3
-- the 'drum' sample we created. Amazing what you can do by tapping
on a laptop microphone [NOTE: the aiff version of this file is
included in the week3-classpatches.zip archive]
