Jenny

An Echoing Ostinato Builder

by R. Luke DuBois.

Jenny is an n-stage sequencer that repeats over and over again, taking pieces of an input soundfile and spitting them out through the PANECHO instrument, which adds stereo echo to the sounds.

Jenny's main window consists of a vertical sequencer interface made up of a set of red buttons (which turn blue as the sequencer passes), a row of radio buttons determining whether the current stage is on, off, or skipped, a row of buttons determining which inskip time is used for that note, and a final row determining the echo effect for the note. Thumbwheels at the top choose which inskip times correspond to the 12 inskip slots that the sequencer recognizes, and at the bottom you will find a tempo slider, a start button, and an INFILE button. There is a master volume control on the right.
The effects panels, accessed on the right or by hitting the key accelerators 0-6 in the white area (0 returns to the sequencer), allow you to change echo parameters for the six different effects that are applicable to each note. The preset delay times will scale with tempo, so they are expressed in note values. There is also a scale for how much soundfile is fed into the delay unit.

Hint: clicking on the red numbered buttons will audition that stage of the sequencer, so you don't have to wait for the sequencer to come around again to see what you've altered.

Usage:

jenny [srate] [nstages]
Defaults to 22050 stereo and eight stages. You can have up to 32 stages in the sequencer, and the sequencer window will have a scrollbar so you can access the other notes.

Bugs / Limitations:

Jenny uses it's own PANTEST instrument, which is slightly different from normal PANECHO. The instrument is a bit buggy however, and so the interface will often crash. There is also no way currently to save settings or write to a soundfile. We're working on it.

Also, Jenny will crash if you try to over-perform the interface. Also, the Rvrs and Loop buttons don't work yet.
