Voice Synthesis using Formants

The mouth and nasal cavity shape the sound of our voice just like a filter. In fact we can create sounds similar to the human vowel sounds using an impulse train and a couple bandpass filters. The filters are tuned to the F1 and F2 formant frequencies that have been measured from actual voices.

To Do:

  • Move the F1 and F2 faders and try to approximate different vowel sounds.
  • Click the buttons to hear an approximation of the vowel sound for the word on the button.
  • Change Q, Frequency, and Pulse versus Noise faders to hear their affect on the realism of the vowels.
