I finished these pieces the morning that Daniel and his friend Jussi
arrived from Finland, and then a few days later we went on our family
Disney cruise ("We're going on the MICKEY boat, Grampop!") up to
Alaska. All was good,
but here I am several weeks later trying to recall what led to these
pieces. I know that I originally wanted to create some 'sonic landscapes'
like Brian Eno had done in his CD On Land or I had done in
several early pieces of my own (see the last half of
this one
for an example).
I've always liked the sense that music was rooted to some place, some
land, but the initial results I was getting this time weren't satisfying
to me -- as 'sonic landscapes'. However, they did seem to be interesting
as small electronic etudes, so that's how I worked them. You can hear
the trajectory pretty clearly from 'sonic landscape' to electronic etude as
you go from places1 to places4. I did still like the original
motivation as somehow fixed pieces of land-based
music, so I kept the names places1,
places2, etc.
