John Schaeffer called me to ask if I would appear on his program "Soundcheck",
and also asked if I knew of any computer/electronic music
pieces that would be good to play for the beginning of Ramaadan, the Islamic
holy month. This was a year after 9/11, so cultural tolerance was
definitely geisting around in the zeit. Beyond some of the Eno/Byrne
pieces on the record "My LIfe in the Bush of Ghosts" and a few
tangentially-related others, I couldn't think of any. So I decided
to write one.
newsoundsramadan is the result. I confused which of Schaeffer's
shows I was going to be on, hence the name. The piece turned out
surprisingly dark. The sound at the end is a match being struck.
