aug09 pieces

With classes starting at Columbia in a few weeks, I needed to stoke
my ability to use Apple's
Logic Pro
music sequencing/mixing software.
We had decided to use it this year as our primary application in the
MIDI Music Production Techniques
class. I had been using Logic to mix audio files for awhile, but
I hadn't done much work using the synthesis capabilities. So I got
out my little MIDI keyboard, hooked it up, and fired up the application.
I decided to do a series of little pieces exploring the different
virtual synthetic devices available in the program. Just for fun,
I set a constraint of doing 'a piece a day' for a week. The
following seven little etudes are the result:
- n1
  (mp3 format; 3:06 -- 3.7 Mbytes)
- n2
  (mp3 format; 3:05 -- 3.7 Mbytes)
- n3
  (mp3 format; 3:26 -- 4.1 Mbytes)
- n4
  (mp3 format; 3:22 -- 4.0 Mbytes)
- n5
  (mp3 format; 3:25 -- 4.1 Mbytes)
- n6
  (mp3 format; 3:17 -- 3.9 Mbytes)
- n7
  (mp3 format; 3:24 -- 4.1 Mbytes)
The pieces grew by just doing them. The first was about 3 minutes
long, so I figured the others should also be around the same length. I
think of these as coming into existence almost like 'automatic writing'; you
just sit down, turn on the equipment,
and let the sounds happen. This was the way I used
to work back in the days of recording at
Zounds Studio
in the late 1970's,
when Rick or Dave or Greg and I would head downstairs and just record
until we finished a new piece almost every night. What a time! I feel
young again!
