Noisolation Headphones

a personal listening experience by Alex Braidwood

Artist and Inventor Alex Braidwood explores the relationships that people in urban areas have with noise and investigates ways in which these relationships can be transformed. By a process of research-through making, he develops objects, installations and sonic experiences that enable listeners to change their relationship with the noise that surrounds them. The Noisolation Headphones mechanically create a personal listening experience by composing noise from the listener’s environment, rendering it differently familiar.

Alex Braidwood is a media artist and design educator who maintains a practice centered around a process of play, experimentation and research-through–making. His current work explores methods for transforming the relationship between people and the noise in their environment. During his 7 years as a design educator, he has developed and taught media design courses to undergraduate graphic design students. He has also created award winning projects for various digital agencies, including Formalplay, a consultancy he formed and operated in the Detroit area prior to pursuing his MFA. Alex has presented papers on design education, led workshops on creative uses of technology, lectured on his process, performed live and exhibited work throughout the US. He earned his BFA in Graphic Design from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI and his MFA in Media Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
