Akira Takaoka is a leading composer of contemporary classical music and music theorist in Japan. He has received many commissions and his compositions have been performed at major festivals worldwide such as NYCEMF, ISCM World Music Days, ICMC, SEAMUS, and SMC in London, Copenhagen, Venice, Florence, New York, Tokyo, etc. His music combines computer technologies, live performance, and visual arts, light art in particular. He also organizes international festivals of contemporary classical and electroacoustic music in Tokyo and other major cities in Japan.

He is currently Professor of Composition at J.F. Oberlin University in Tokyo, Japan, as well as Professor at Tokyo College of Music, Lecturer of Music Theory at Tokyo University of the Arts in Tokyo, Japan, Lecturer of Music Cognition at the Graduate School of Sciences and Engineering, Chuo University in Tokyo, Japan, and Research Associate at Durham University in Durham, UK. He is also frequently invited to give lectures internationally. His research on atonal pitch organization, algorithmic composition, and music cognition is internationally recognized at major conferences such as ICMPC, SMPC, and ICMC.

He studied composition, harmony, counterpoint, and fugue with Profs. Masayuki Nagatomi and Kazumi Yanai (Tokyo University of the Arts) privately and received a BA and an MA in philosophy from Keio University in Tokyo and an MA and a PhD in music from Columbia University, where he was a Fulbright scholar.


高岡　明：作曲家、音楽理論家。作曲、和声学、対位法、フーガを永冨正之と矢内和三（東京藝術大学（当時））、ピアノをニールス・オスビー Niels Østbye、オルガンを ジョージ・スタオファー George B. Stauffer に個人レッスンで学ぶ。慶応義塾大学文学部哲学科卒業。同大学院文学研究科哲学専攻後期博士課程在学中にフルブライト奨学生およびコロンビア大学プレジデント・フェローとしてコロンビア大学大学院音楽科博士課程に留学し、音楽のPhD（博士号）を取得する。コロンビア大学では、作曲を ジョーゼフ・ドゥビエル Joseph Dubiel に、無調理論、リズム理論、分析理論、音楽認知などの音楽理論を ジョナサン・クレイマー Jonathan D. Kramer、ジョーゼフ・ドゥビエル Joseph Dubiel、 フレッド・レーアダール Fred Lerdahl に、コンピュータ音楽を ブラッド・ガートン Brad Garton、音楽史学を ウォルター・フリシュ Walter Frisch、認識論 Bayesian Decision Theory を アイザック・リーヴァイ Isaac Levi（哲学科）に学ぶ。器楽作品、声楽作品、コンピュータ音楽作品、マルチメディア作品の制作、Java言語による自動作曲プログラムおよび楽曲分析プログラムの開発、無調理論、音楽認知、人工生命を用いた作曲アルゴリズムの研究を専門とする。作曲作品を欧米の音楽祭および国際会議で毎年上演し、音楽理論の研究論文を国際音楽知覚認知会議などの国際学会で発表する。また、国際音楽祭および国際会議の運営委員、審査員および欧米の学術誌の論文査読委員を務める。現在、桜美林大学芸術文化学群音楽専修教授、東京音楽大学特任教授、中央大学理工学部大学院非常勤講師、東京藝術大学楽理科非常勤講師および博士論文指導教員、イギリス Durham University Research Associate。
